Getting started

What does SettleUp do?

SettleUp tracks shared expenses between you and other people — a friend, your family, roommates, a trip group — and shows, in plain language, who has to give what and who has to get what. No spreadsheets, no awkward maths.

How do I sign in?

On first launch you sign in with your email or your Google account, then add your WhatsApp number. Your number is how we safely back up and restore your data, and how reminders reach the right person — you only do this once.

Do I need an internet connection to use it?

Only for that first sign-in. After that, SettleUp works fully offline — add and edit expenses, see balances, and review history with no signal at all. Everything syncs automatically the next time you're online.

Money & balances

How are balances worked out?

Every time you add an expense or record a payment, SettleUp updates who has to give what across that shared record. Balances are always calculated from your entries, so the totals are never out of date and never need manual fixing.

Can I track expenses in my own currency?

Yes. Each shared record uses a single currency that you choose when you create it. Amounts are stored exactly, with no rounding surprises.

I made a mistake on an expense — can I fix it?

Yes. Open the expense to edit or remove it. In a shared record, the person who created an entry can change it; others can suggest a change, so the history stays honest for everyone involved.

Sharing & sync

What's the difference between a 1-to-1 and a group?

A 1-to-1 tracks expenses between just you and one other person. A group tracks them across several people — handy for trips, households, or any shared pot. Each record stays separate, with its own balances.

How does sharing with someone else work?

For a 1-to-1, you invite the other person and they accept before any financial details are shared. For a group, an admin adds members and they get access right away. Either way, everyone sees the same up-to-date picture.

Will my data move between my phones?

Yes. As long as you're signed in, your data is backed up automatically. Sign in on a new phone — or reinstall on the same one — and everything comes back.

Privacy & your account

What do you do with my contacts?

When you match contacts, SettleUp sends only one-way scrambled fingerprints of phone numbers — your contacts' actual numbers never leave your device. We never sell your personal information. Full details are in our Privacy Policy.

How do I delete my account?

Open the app → AccountDelete Account. This permanently removes your account and all associated data. It can't be undone, so we ask you to confirm twice.

Is SettleUp free?

Yes — SettleUp is free to download and use.
